National Study of Long-Term Care Providers (NSLTCP) Results to Be Revealed in Research

Inaugural survey achieves target response rate

LTCPData collection for the 2012 National Study of Long-Term Care Providers, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), closed in late February 2013. Thanks to the tremendous outreach efforts by NADSA and other provider associations, the final response rate for the adult day services center questionnaire was over 65%, which exceeds the target response rate. NCHS sincerely appreciates all the adult day services center directors and staff who took the time to complete this important questionnaire.

Currently, NCHS is editing the data files to prepare them for release through the NCHS Research Data Center (RDC) by the end of this year. Additionally, NCHS is preparing a long-term care overview report that will feature the important findings on adult day services centers from the 2012 NSLTCP, together with the other four major long-term care providers: nursing homes, home health care agencies, hospices, and residential care communities. This report is scheduled for release in December 2013. Another report, a stand-alone report on adult day services centers, is scheduled for release by early 2014. These reports will include national estimates, and state-level estimates where possible, on center characteristics, such as size, ownership, staffing, certification status, services provided, and center funding; participants’ demographics, such as age, sex, and race; participants’ physical and cognitive functioning status, such as limitations in activities of daily living and cognitive impairment; and participants’ sources of payment.

NSLTCP will be conducted every other year, and the next fielding is scheduled to begin in June 2014. Policymakers, long-term care providers, health care planners, and researchers will look to these data to monitor changes in the adult day services industry, which is an important and growing sector of long-term care services and supports to the elderly and disabled populations.

NCHS will join NADSA in October at the 2013 annual conference in Louisville, Kentucky to present the highlights of the 2012 NSLTCP findings on adult day services centers. Conference attendees can speak to NCHS representatives at the conference to learn more about how they can participate in and support the 2014 survey, which is already in the planning stages.

Again, NCHS values the overwhelming support that NADSA and its members gave to this federal initiative and NCHS looks forward to even more adult day services centers participating in the 2014 NSLTCP. Thanks for your continued support of NSLTCP!
