National Study of Long-Term Care Providers

Starting in August 2016, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) will conduct the third wave of a biennial nationally representative survey of adult day services, as part of its groundbreaking National Study of Long-Term Care Providers (NSLTCP). NSLTCP is an ongoing federally funded data collection effort that began in 2012 to gather and report national and state information about the characteristics of adult day services and other paid, regulated long-term care services providers, and the people they serve.

Questionnaires can be completed and submitted online or by mailing in a hardcopy version of the completed questionnaire. Information and links for the online questionnaire will start being mailed in August, along with a packet containing the hardcopy version of the questionnaire and other information about the study. The 2016 questionnaires will take on average 30 minutes to complete. Providing accurate responses to each question, including filling in zeroes where applicable, is very important for data quality. When you submit the completed questionnaire, you help ensure that the adult day services industry will be accurately represented in the next wave of NSLTCP reports. NCHS urges directors of adult day services centers who receive an adult day services questionnaire packet to please submit their completed questionnaire as soon as possible.

The 2016 data collected from each participating adult day services center will be kept confidential, as was done for the 2012 and 2014 NSLTCP waves. NCHS has a long history of conducting surveys and is required by federal law to protect the privacy of the information it collects in its surveys. NCHS has contracted with RTI International, an independent, nonprofit research organization to collect the NSLTCP data; their dedicated survey team can answer your questions about the survey at their toll-free phone number (1-866-245-8078). More information about the survey is available on the NSLTCP website.

CDC uses the information collected through NSLTCP to produce publicly available reports and findings on the major long-term care services sectors including adult day services centers, assisted living and other residential care communities, home health agencies, nursing homes, and hospices. Links to NSLTCP reports and products from the 2012 and 2014 surveys of adult day services can be accessed by visiting NSLTCP’s Study Results and Publications website. Links to tables with state-specific results can also be accessed and downloaded from the website.
