Outstanding Adult Day Center Award

2a

This award recognizes outstanding and innovative adult day centers. The day center is recognized as a model from which others can learn as “best practice.”

The mission of Joy’s House is to provide exceptional adult day services by sharing an embracing, safe and caring environment while providing family caregivers peace of mind, education, understanding and encouragement. Fulfillment of the mission is evidenced by their unique “bi-care” approach.

Corrine Walter and Julie Prather accepted the award for Joy’s House.

The center recently launched a series of programs to educate, support and encourage caregivers in the community—regardless of their affiliation with Joy’s House. Programs include the following:

  • CARE Kit designed to keep important medical and care information in one place. Joy’s House is exploring ways to provide the kits to a larger audience by offering this product to other adult day centers to share with their families.
  • Speed dating networking events for caregivers and experts in the field
  • 8-week art therapy and dance movement therapy sessions for Joy’s House families
  • Two annual caregiver retreats where caregivers can gain access to resources, educational sessions and pampering, including A Day Away Caregiver Retreat with keynote speakers, aging-related resources and TLC—catered lunch, massages, etc. (one of the most widely-known and celebrated caregiver support programs).
  • Co-hosted weekly radio show, “Caregiver Crossing” on WIBC-FM in Indianapolis, IN, with Joy’s House President and Founder, Tina McIntosh.  Consideration is being given to expanding this “on-air support group for family caregivers” to a statewide listening area.

Family caregiver Sheryl Chamberlain spoke of her husband’s involvement at Joy’s House, despite his waning communication ability. Sheryl said, “Roger participates in most everything. That is my ‘real’ Roger—in the middle of or leading others to join the activity. The two activities he loves the most are the art therapy and music programs. The artwork he does is beautiful, and apparently an interest that was buried deeply. He always liked music, but at Joy’s House he even participates in karaoke. That is something he has never done before.”

The 19th century farm house from which Joy’s House was formed was designed and decorated intentionally to feel like “home,” but it is far more than that. The garden is a main attraction where guests are welcome at any time. Bird feeders, walking paths and dry water beds complete a magnificent and relaxing scenery. It is homelike … special … beautiful!
