John Shippen, the nurse at the Susan J. Rheem Adult Day Center in Prescott Valley, AZ, strives to not only provide great care and dedicated services, but to be a companion and listening ear for the participants. His willingness to go above and beyond is evident in his readiness to step in and offer his help. Whether it is in the kitchen, transportation, activities, or administrative, John is always willing to support his fellow co-workers, offering words of encouragement when a co-worker needs to be lifted up. He is well respected for that.
John loves people, works hard, and has a positive attitude and a fantastic sense of humor, according to his co-workers. His presence alone lifts the spirits of those around him.
Recently John took on the challenging task of implementing new I–Care Plans, and he has demonstrated outstanding competence with the task. In addition to the many daily tasks that John takes on as the Wellness Nurse, he also leads a weekly devotions group with our participants, and takes time to visit participants who are recovering in the hospital. John is committed to investing the necessary time that it takes to get to know the participants and their families.
Over the years John has consistently impressed others with his genuine and heartfelt caring attitude and his natural ability to provide excellent person-centered care. He often recognizes needs of the participants and/or their families and goes above and beyond to meet their needs. “I am honored to work with this stellar gentleman and believe that he meets the challenging requirements and expectations of the Direct Care Staff Award,” said co-worker Laura Dreibelbis.
John’s co-workers at another center in the parent company were sorry to see him change centers when the nursing position became available at another location. They were a bit heartbroken. John is a great asset to the program and the participants. He counsels participants in such a way that they leave his side feeling self-assured and proud of who they are. His positive attitude and eagerness to assist the enter team makes John a natural role model.
