NADSA Public Policy Conference
Help Advance Adult Day Services on Capitol Hill
May 4-5, 2015
With a new Congress in session, we invite you to join us and other adult day services supporters in Washington D.C. as we advocate for adult day with our elected officials! First time to D.C. as an advocate? No worries—seasoned advocates will be paired with new advocates because together, everyone achieves more!
“We had the basics from NADSA. When meeting with the Congressman, I gave him a picture I had taken when he visited RossWoods. He asked his staffer to put it on his bookshelf. He mentioned how much he enjoyed visiting RossWoods and even described his visit, which was almost a year and a half ago. I think connecting personally with the legislator really adds to the conversation. I really could not do that when I met with the legislator assistant. He was all business and did not have time for small talk. I was his 10th meeting that day.”
—Laurie Parker, GA
“I think the public policy event is a must for every Administrative staff member. It is extremely enlightening and you really feel a part of a great organized effort. My husband spoke with two physicians from Florida, which commended our group for appearing well put together, cohesive and well organized. It was a great educational experience!”
—Janet Steiner, FL
“To all those who feel that attending won’t make a difference, I can guarantee you that doing nothing will have the effect of not even existing. If we can’t be bothered to advocate for ourselves, then we have only ourselves to blame for whatever happens to the Adult Day Services industry.”
—Howard Snyder, Senior Care Centers of America

Looking Back at 2014…
Approximately 50 adult day services supporters from 22 states convened in Washington, DC, in April 2014 for the National Adult Day Services Public Policy Conference. Attendees traveled from California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin to speak up for adult day services. Over 100 legislative visits were pre-scheduled for advocates to meet with their elected officials or their legislative staff.
As one attendee said, “Our representatives in Congress do not know all they need to know to make decisions.” We, the people, must invite our elected officials to see adult day services in action. This is key to getting action right now with legislators. Have your legislators been invited to your day center recently? It makes for a terrific public relations opportunity for your center to get media attention while also educating them about the valuable services you offer. When asked what others should know about the importance of getting involved in public policy, 18-year Florida veteran director Janet Steiner said, “If they care about the future of their business, then advocacy has to be part of their program. The squeaky wheel gets the grease! Unity and numbers make waves. Advocacy should be an expected part of providing a service that so little is known about.”
