Heroes among us
Anybody can operate a business, but it takes someone with creativity, perseverance, integrity, compassion and resources to successfully operate an adult day services center. Working in a center affects your daily schedule, your nighttime schedule, how you sleep, your eating habits, your social life, your political aptitude, your personal care skills, your pride and your humility, just for starters. Adult day services workers are heroes among us!
You are not alone
Perhaps you are a veteran worker in adult day services, you have recently begun working in adult day services, or you are considering opening a center. Whatever your situation, you do not have to work alone. Today there are over 4,600 adult day services centers nationwide, which, at any given time, serve over 260,000 older persons and younger adults with disabilities.
Unique but similar
Adult day services provide health, social and therapeutic activities in a supportive group environment for individuals with cognitive and/or functional impairments. Some are freestanding centers or programs; others are affiliated with a facility or organization such as a nursing home, assisted living community, senior center or rehabilitation facility. If you have seen one adult day center, you have seen one adult day center. While our daily schedules and structures are similar, the people who work in adult day centers and the people who choose to use the services bring life and character that make each center unique.
There is work to be done
Diversification in funding is an important goal for adult day services providers, as unpredictability presists in adult day services funding, particularly on the state level. There is a continued need to market adult day services to the community and to other key players in the long-term care network, such as care managers and hospital discharge planners. There is a pressing need to educate the public and decision-makers on the function of adult day services and the potential that adult day services have in delivering cost-effective health and long-term care services.
